Understanding the structural effects of electron irradiation on glasses used for space radiation shielding
Abstract: I propose to investigate the structural effects of electron radiation on antimony-doped borate glass systems proposed as lead-free based alternative shielding glasses, which are often used for cover glass, windows, and lenses in space infrastructure. I will use neutrons to probe the local structure, where the total scattering data (Bragg and diffuse scattering) will be collected and then transformed into atomic pair distribution function (PDF) data via Fourier transformation to determine the interatomic-distances and atomic positions pre- and post-bulk irradiation. This structural data alongside complementary results from X-ray diffraction PDF, pycnometry, Raman spectroscopy, Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR), and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), will be used as parameters to develop static 3D structural models, and will be linked to changes observed in the physical, mechanical, optical, and radiation shielding properties caused by electron irradiation.
