Resolving the inhomogeneous spin structure of magnetic nanoflowers
Abstract: In recent years, the field of nanomagnetism has benefited from magnetic defects to expand the limits of knowledge and applications. However, there are fundamental research questions still to be addressed to leverage the potentialities of defect-induced spin disorder. Magnetic hyperthermia (MHT), based on the heat release of nanoparticles (NPs) to deactivate cancerous cells, requires larger specific absorption rates to improve the therapeutic efficiency. In this context, spin disorder emerges as a game changer. Using polarized SANS with uniaxial polarization analysis, we will picture the inhomogeneous spin structure of maghemite nanoflowers, one of the best candidates for MHT, connecting the internal spin disorder to their excellent MHT performance. We will measure nanoflowers with sizes between about 50-200 nm, which consist of a multi-grain structure where the inter-grain boundaries deliver the internal disorder, capturing their inhomogeneous magnetic arrangement (presumed to be vortex-like) and connecting their disordered microstructure to their outstanding heat release performance. The polarized neutron data analysis will be accompanied by numerical micromagnetic simulations.
