Vibrational dynamics of evolving phases of lithium hydride under ammonia and hydrogen

Abstract: In the family of hydrogen stores, lithium hydride (LiH), and its derivatives, such as lithium amide (LiNH2) and imide (Li2NH) gained tremendous interest in recent years owing to their potential for hydrogen storage/production, ammonia synthesis, and ammonia decomposition reactions. In essence, the elementary reaction between LiH and NH3 is key to many intermediate phases. Under gas-flowing (NH3 or H2) conditions, we expect to form nonstoichiometric phases at the LiH surface and interfaces. Similar phases have recently been reported in particles of both partially hydrogenated Li3N and partially dehydrogenated LiNH2 + 2LiH systems. We believe an improved understanding of the reaction pathways of such phases and their interfaces will assist in developing future hydride-nitride materials. We propose to study the ammonolysis reaction (hydrogen generation) of LiH using gaseous NH3 and the hydrogenation reaction (ammonia synthesis) under H2 flow. We expect to observe the coexistence of the hydride-amide phases and their impact on the solid-gas exchange dynamics involved will be of interest to a broader hydrogen and ammonia-related research community. We ask for 4 days on TOSCA to study 6 samples prepared under flowing NH3 and/or H2 gas conditions between 100 - 350C.
