Deformation Mechanisms of 321 Stainless Steel under Cryogenic and Hydrogen Conditions
Abstract: As part of the UK's 'Jet Zero' strategy to make all domestic flights net zero by 2040, it is essential that alternative fuels, such as liquid hydrogen, are explored for use in aviation. Expected temperature ranges within a liquid hydrogen fuel system are large, from 20 to 293 K, giving rise to challenging mechanical conditions. As such, the mechanical behaviour of potential liquid hydrogen fuel system alloys must be characterised in their anticipated environments. Uniaxial tensile tests will be performed on samples of SS321, an austenitic stainless steel and strong candidate for aerospace hydrogen pipelines. Tests will be undertaken at 293, 77 and 20 K, with the addition of high pressure gaseous hydrogen pre-charging at elevated temperatures to two hydrogen concentrations, quantified with thermal desorption spectroscopy measurements, to investigate the added effect of hydrogen on the cryogenic mechanical properties of SS321. We hypothesize multiple potential effects of hydrogen on the cryogenic deformation mechanisms and mechanical properties of SS321, necessitating neutron diffraction measurements. This proposal forms an extension to a previously accepted proposal (RB2520233) investigating solely cryogenic mechanical properties of SS321 and two other potential fuel system alloys.
