Investigation of hydride deformation mechanism using Convolutional Multiple Whole Profile - Neutron Diffraction (CMWP-ND) method
Abstract: Zirconium alloys such as Zircaloy-4 are essential fuel-cladding materials in light-water reactors owing to their low neutron absorption and good corrosion resistance. However, hydrogen uptake during service leads to hydride precipitation and embrittlement. The deformation mechanisms of these hydrides remain unclear due to their complex crystallography and constrained interaction with the -Zr matrix. This project will apply a combined Convolutional Multiple Whole Profile Neutron Diffraction (CMWP-ND) method to quantify dislocation density and strain partitioning in zirconium deuterides under tensile loading. Deuterium substitution will enhance neutron scattering and enable precise defect analysis. In-situ tests on deuterium-charged and uncharged Zircaloy-4 samples along rolling and transverse directions at 20 C, 200 C, and 300 C will reveal temperature-dependent deformation and deuteride dissolution. The results will elucidate the mechanisms governing hydride-induced embrittlement and improve predictive models for cladding performance. This work will enhance Engin-X analytical capability and support the development of more damage-tolerant materials for future nuclear reactors.
