Understanding deformation mechanisms during tensile and compression loading in conventional and HIP-manufactured CP-Ti
Abstract: Hexagonal close-packed (HCP) metals are vital for the nuclear and aerospace industry, where zirconium and titanium alloys are used throughout reactor cores and aeroengine components. Conventional processing techniques of HCP material (rolling, pilgering, etc.) produce strong crystallographic textures that dominate the mechanical response and lead to significant anisotropic behaviour. This dominant texture obscures underlying deformation mechanisms and impacts the determination of model parameters for crystal plasticity simulations. Hot isostatic pressing has been used to produce texture-free and fully dense Commercially Pure Ti (a surrogate for Zircaloy-4 as not available as powder), which presents the opportunity to perform novel deformation studies. The proposed ENGIN-X experiments will compare the activity of deformation modes during tension and compression of the novel texture-free HIPed material compared to conventionally processed material with exactly the same oxygen content, revealing the impact of texture and local grain neighbourhood on polycrystalline deformation. These results will be used to inform model parameters and develop a robust crystal plasticity model.
