Radical insights: neutron irradiation effects in polymer nuclear track detectors for dosimetry
Abstract: Notwithstanding the pivotal role of solid-state (polymeric) nuclear track detectors in monitoring charged particles and assessing environmental radiation levels, little is known about the products following irradiation. These products (e.g., broken chains, radicals, unsaturated bonds) facilitate faster chemical attack, ultimately facilitating etching holes (tracks) that are used to provide information about mass, energy, and momentum of the particles. This proposal aims to explore and quantify the type of defects produced relatively to neutron irradiation using muons as local probes, owing to their ability to be easily captured by defects and interact with radicals.
