Characterizing neutron irradiation effects in polymer nuclear track detectors
Abstract: Notwithstanding the pivotal role of solid-state (polymeric) nuclear track detectors in tracking charged particles and assessing environmental radiation levels, little is known about the products following irradiation. These products (e.g., broken chains, radicals, unsaturated bonds) facilitate faster chemical attack, ultimately leading to etching holes (tracks) that are used to provide information about mass, energy, and momentum of the particles. This proposal aims to explore and quantify the type of defects produced relatively to neutron irradiation in combination with muon spectroscopy, to better understand aging and fading effects and local interactions.
