Hydrogen Embrittlement of new 316L Welded Stainless Steels at Cryogenic Temperatures
Abstract: This proposal aims to assess the suitability of two 316L (EN 1.4404 and EN 1.4435) welded stainless steels for liquid hydrogen (LH2) storage under varying environmental conditions. Tensile tests will be performed at cryogenic temperature (20 K) for both hydrogen-charged and uncharged specimens. In total, eight experiments are planned, requiring approximately four days of beamtime on ENGIN-X. To capture the evolution of the material's internal structure during loading, the tensile tests will be coupled with in-situ neutron diffraction. This will allow real-time monitoring of neutron intensity and lattice displacements, enabling the evaluation of internal stress distributions, phase analyses and phase transformations such as the austenite-to-martensite transition. The in-situ approach will provide simultaneous insights into both the macroscopic mechanical behaviour and the underlying deformation mechanisms at the atomic scale. The findings from this study are expected to offer critical knowledge for the safe selection and design of stainless steels intended for hydrogen-related cryogenic applications, with particular relevance to the structural integrity of welded regions in LH2 storage systems.
