Benchmarking physics models for muon frictional cooling in helium gas
Abstract: Beams of low energy muons are a powerful probe of thin films and can also be used for accelerator and particle physics applications, such as g-2 experiments. In order to produce these beams, efficient methods of cooling surface muons are needed, where at ISIS an internationally competitive source of slow muons could be realised using frictional cooling methods. Using the muCool physics models implemented in Geant4, we have simulated a range of different frictional cooling cells and optimised their design. Here, we will test a minimal frictional cooling cell to benchmark the physics models in the simulations, which is essential for confirming their accuracy and further progressing the design of a low energy muon beam at ISIS.
