Cold-neutron Diffraction Study of Industrial Multi-layer Pouch and Cylindrical Li-ion Battery Cells
Abstract: Encouraged by the results from our recently published operando (cold-)neutron study of single-layer Li-ion battery pouch cell, we want to explore the utility of cold-neutron diffraction at WISH to study industrial cells of larger formats without any build modifications, electrolyte deuteration or isotope enrichments. These cells, namely, multi-layered pouch and cylindrical cells, are identical to those used in industrial applications and hence, offer truly representative media to study the physiochemical degradation mechanisms that affect electrochemical performance and therefore, it will have direct industrial relevance. In this proposal, we request 1 day of beamtime to measure representative multi-layer and cylindrical cells, to understand the quality of data and optimise measurement parameters for future studies in operando. Furthermore, these cells are part of another ongoing study, and thus, the data from the rapid access measurements will be useful addition to those works as a structural characterisation of the electrode materials after fabrication. These cells have already been measured on Polaris by directly attaching them on to the candle stick holder, and so we believe the same configuration may be used on WISH as well.
