Spin fluctuations in the unconventional superconductor UPt3

Abstract: UPt3 is an unconventional superconductor (SC) with Tc = 0.5K whose normal state undergoes an antiferromagnetic transition into a state with a small moment order at Q=(0.5,0,1) and a temperature TN = 5.0K. Despite its low Tc, it has attracted considerable attention owing to the richness of its phase diagram, which exhibits three SC phases, and its putative spin-triplet superconductivity. There remains a long-standing debate about the pairing symmetry in UPt3 with both E2u (odd parity) and E1g (even parity) order parameters proposed, the former of which could support spin triplet pairing. Whilst spin-triplet pairing is typically mediated by ferromagnetic fluctuations, evidence for AF mediated spin triplet pairing has recently been reported in UTe2 and can be understood as arising due to nesting between Fermi surface segments with like sign, but for a pairing function which has an odd parity. In this proposal we seek to shed light on the pairing symmetry by measuring the spin fluctuations across the superconducting transition, to search for signatures of a spin resonance. Such a signature could help resolve the long-standing question of the superconducting pairing symmetry in UPt3.
