Resolving Magnetic Shell Formation in Fe?O?/BiOI Core?Shell Nanoparticles Using Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS)
Abstract: Fe O /BiOI core shell nanoparticles combine visible-light photocatalysis with magnetic recoverability, offering a promising platform for sustainable environmental remediation. However, how the Fe O shell forms and evolves with loading remains unknown, limiting our ability to optimize structural control, charge separation, and recyclability. This proposal aims to resolve the nanoscale shell morphology and magnetic domain structure in Fe O /BiOI nanoparticles using Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS), a method uniquely suited to this system. Unlike SAXS or TEM, SANS offers bulk sensitivity, contrast between BiOI and Fe O , and the ability to detect magnetic contributions in polydisperse powders. We will study five nanoparticle samples with 5 to 25 weight percent Fe O to track the transition from coherent shell growth to aggregation. Using a composite model adapted from Zelenakova et al. (2019), we will extract quantitative parameters including shell thickness, interfacial contrast, and clustering behavior. This one day static SANS2D experiment is low risk and high yield. The outcomes will support the rational design of recyclable core shell photocatalysts and will be disseminated through peer reviewed publications and presentations at neutron scattering and energy materials symposia.
