Local distortions and orbital disorder in ultra-high A-site variance perovskite Ce0.5Ba0.5MnO3

Abstract: Perovskites are highly sensitive to their chemical compositions. In particular, the cation distribution on the A-site strongly affects their properties. Chemical disorder at the A-site, characterised by the variance associated with the ionic radii of the cations, also has a profound effect. We have synthesised a new high-pressure perovskite, Ce4+Ba2+Mn3+2O6, with the express aim of stabilising a combination of cation layering and octahedral tilting, allowing stabilisation of magnetoelectric coupling. However, it is seen to remain cubic down to temperatures as low as 1.5 K, suggesting the necessity of local distortions. Additionally, Ce0.5Ba0.5MnO3 offers an ideal analogue to the pseudo-cubic state seen in LaMnO3, with widely-discussed order-disorder transitions. It has a similar average A-site ionic radius and valence state, and remains in this pseudo-cubic state down to much lower temperatures. Our previous experiment on Polaris (2420349) collected room temperature total scattering data of Ce0.5Ba0.5MnO3. Symmetry-adapted mode analysis has been undertaken, and suggests the presence of a rare tilt pattern combining both in- and out-of-phase tilts in the same axis, seen in very few perovskite structures. This variable-temperature continuation experiment would allow deconvolution of thermal broadening and magnetic order from structural distortions, allowing more confidence in the identification of this tilt pattern.
