The Magnetic Structure of Altermagnetic MnTe

Abstract: We propose a single crystal diffraction experiment, to be performed on WISH, to determine the room-temperature magnetic symmetry of the most prominent altermagnetic candidate material, MnTe. The magnetic structure is broadly known, but there remains some debate as to the exact orientation of the magnetic moments; crucial information in determining the true magnetic symmetry. Despite efforts in characterizing thin films, it is essential that we now solve this issue in bulk single crystals. Our work will provide a key reference for the burgeoning field of altermagnetism, as knowledge of the exact magnetic symmetry underpins theoretical descriptions of altermagnetic phenomenology and informs mechanisms for domain control, which will form the topic of a future study.
