Probing Devil?s Staircase Magnetic Ordering in a Mixed B-site Perovskite Single Crystal via Elastic Neutron Scattering

Abstract: We report a newly discovered Devil s Staircase magnetic behavior in the mixed B-site double perovskite La2Co0.4Mn1.6O6 Magnetization, magnetostriction, and magnetodielectric measurements reveal a series of discrete step-like transitions below 3.2 K, characteristic of multiple commensurate magnetic states stabilized by strong spin lattice coupling. However, the microscopic spin configurations responsible for these plateaus remain unknown. We propose elastic neutron scattering measurements on the WISH diffractometer to directly probe the magnetic Bragg reflections associated with each plateau phase under varying magnetic fields and temperatures. The experiment aims to construct a comprehensive magnetic phase diagram and elucidate the origin of the Devil's Staircase behavior in this system. Understanding such behavior will provide valuable insights into frustration-driven magnetism and magnetostructural coupling in correlated oxides. We request 2 days of beamtime for this investigation.
