Probing Spin-Orbit Entangled Magnetic Excitations in the Pyrochlore Ruthenate Lu?Ru?O? Using Inelastic Neutron Scattering
Abstract: The ruthenate pyrochlores are intriguing 4d transition-metal oxides where electron correlations, crystal-field effects, frustration, and strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) interplay to produce unconventional magnetism. Lu Ru O (LRO), a nonmagnetic rare-earth member, isolates the intrinsic Ru sublattice magnetism without rare-earth contributions. Magnetization and neutron diffraction measurements reveal antiferromagnetic ordering below ~80 K with a non-collinear spin arrangement. Given the combined effects of SOC and geometric frustration, the low-energy magnetic spectrum of LRO is expected to exhibit gapped spin excitations, anisotropic dispersions, or singlet triplet dynamics, making it an excellent candidate for inelastic neutron scattering studies.
