NEW TARGETS FOR ANTICANCER DRUGS ? IMPACT ON THE DYNAMICS OF HUMAN CANCER CELLS

Abstract: The search for efficient anticancer drugs is prompted by the urgent clinical need to improve the prognosis of oncological patients, cancer being the second cause of death worldwide. This QENS experiment will probe intracellular water dynamics in human liver and lung cells (malignant and healthy), with and without Pt-drugs (DNA-binders and phosphate-clamps), searching for differences between: (i) healthy and malignant systems, to better understand normal-to-cancer transition; (ii) drug-free and drug-exposed cells, to assess the drug´s impact on intraccellular water dynamics (a potential secondary pharmacological target). Coupled to previous results, molecular level information will be achieved on carcinogenesis and the cytotoxic profile of unconventional Pt-drugs ? an innovative way of identifying particular features associated to malignancy and of tackling drug´s pharmacodynamics.
