Steady shear Rheo-SANS of Pluronic-Hyaluronic acid micellar polycrystals in the radial and tangential sample projections
Abstract: Pluronics (PLs) are thermo-responsive amphiphilic block copolymers widely used for depot injectable drug delivery. To enhance the mechanical strength, drug release rate, and bioavailability, PLs are often formulated with bio-additives, such as a polysaccharide polyelectrolyte hyaluronic acid (HA). The PL-HA systems form micellar polycrystals at temperatures of interest to their applications. Their rheology indicates complex elastoviscoplastic behaviour, and shear banding at shear rates regularly encountered during their delivery/transport. The aim of this study is to characterize the structural changes at steady shear rates below, within, and beyond their banding regime in the Ti-Couette geometry, along the velocity(1)-vorticity(3), and gradient(2)-3 shear planes, complementary to our earlier 1-2 shear cell-based studies, and understand the overall effect of HA therein. The structure-property relationships thus obtained are essential for the design of optimal pharmaceutical formulations from our PL-HA mixtures.
