Contrast Variation SANS Experiments for Probing the Structure of Waterborne Polyurethane Dispersions

Abstract: Waterborne polyurethane dispersions (PUDs) offer a sustainable route to high-performance coatings by eliminating volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions associated with solvent-borne polyurethane synthesis. Our recent SAXS, GPC, and MALDI-TOF studies revealed that PUD formation resembles the self-assembly of amphiphilic statistical copolymers, with particle size governed by surface charge density. To further validate the particle surface charge (PSC) model, we propose to directly determine the distribution and amount of the hydrophilic stabilising agent, dimethylolpropionic acid (DMPA) at the particle surface. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) with contrast variation using H2O and D2O mixtures will be employed to resolve the internal composition of PUD particles. These data will also provide information about structural inhomogeneities associated with the supramolecular hydrogen-bonded phase formed by DMPA and hydrogenated methylene diphenyl diisocyanate oligomers. Selective deuteration via chain extension of PU in D2O and H2O will additionally facilitate contrast matching of different components, providing quantitative insight into the structure and interparticle interactions. These results will establish a direct link between particle surface composition, charge, and structural organisation, testing the universality of the PSC model and advancing the understanding of waterborne PU systems.
