Low-phonon dynamics in BaO?TeO? tellurite glasses: establishing a host platform for single-photon emitter applications
Abstract: Quantum photonic devices require host matrices that minimise vibrational loss to preserve radiative transitions in single-photon emitters (SPEs). Tellurite glasses are promising due to their relatively low phonon energies (~700 750 cm , 85 93 meV), enabling optical transitions not achievable in silica. BaO TeO glasses provide compositional flexibility, yet the connection between their evolving atomic structure and vibrational density of states (DOS) is unquantified. Our Raman and neutron total scattering (GEM, ISIS) show that BaO modifies the tellurite network by converting TeO trigonal bipyramids into TeO /TeO units, shifting the vibrational edge towards the Te O stretching limit. X-ray diffraction indicates structural drift from - to -TeO -like order with BaO content. Ab-initio DFT predicts phonon DOS up to ~93 meV for TeO polymorphs, but no experimental DOS exists for BaO TeO glasses. We will measure the phonon DOS across six compositions (10 25 mol% BaO) using MARI in repetition-rate multiplication mode (E = 180 meV with 30 meV rep), covering both the high-frequency Te O edge and low-energy boson peak (<10 meV). Data will be collected at 10 K and 300 K on fine-powder samples (~5 g) sealed in Al cans, compatible with the MARI sample changer. This study will deliver the first quantitative mapping of the vibrational landscape in BaO TeO glasses, establishing the structural dynamical link that underpins their role as low-phonon hosts for room-temperature SPEs.
