Muon diffusion in Re

Abstract: Muon spectroscopy experiments are often complemented by ab initio methods, since many properties such as the muon's final embedding site and the Fermi contact field can now be reliably calculated from first-principles simulations. However, analyzing diffusion phenomena remains particularly challenging because the muon's small mass requires an accurate treatment of quantum effects. The authors of this proposal are developing an effective strategy to compute muon diffusion mechanisms in metals at the quantum level. The method is tested on elemental solids and here we propose to investigate the high temperature diffusion of positive muons in elemental Re. This is a resubmission as a Rapid Access proposal following the panel's positive judgment of the standard-access proposal and their suggestion to resubmit in this form after confirmation of sample availability.
