Understanding Structure?Electrochemistry relationships in LiNixMnyCozO2?LiMnaFebPO4 Cathode Blends via Operando Cold-Neutron Diffraction
Abstract: This proposal aims to elucidate the structure-electrochemistry relationships in blended LiNixMnyCozO2-LiMnaFebPO4 (NMC-LMFP) cathodes using operando cold-neutron diffraction on the WISH diffractometer. Building on our previous WISH experiment (RB2510713) and in operando X-ray diffraction studies, we will investigate how the NMC:LMFP ratio and cycling rate influence the (de)lithiation mechanisms and crystallographic evolution in single-layer pouch full cells produced via industrially relevant manufacturing routes. The large beam footprint and high reciprocal-space resolution of WISH enable statistically robust insights into phase transitions across heterogeneous blended electrodes, overcoming the spatial and elemental limitations of X-ray techniques. Three cells with blend ratios of 0.3:0.7, 0.5:0.5, and 0.7:0.3 will be cycled between 2.5-4.4 V under two C-rates (0.33C and 1C). Sequential Rietveld refinements of the operando data, supported by ex situ measurements, will capture phase evolution and lattice parameter changes throughout cycling. These results will provide the first comprehensive crystallographic understanding of blended NMC-LMFP cathodes under industrially relevant conditions, informing the design of next-generation Li-ion cathodes that balance energy density, safety, and lifetime.
