Probing the magnetic dynamics of Jeff = 1/2 triangular lattice using the muon spectroscopy measurements

Abstract: Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are unconventional states of matter where electron spins remain disordered even at absolute zero, driven by strong quantum fluctuations and magnetic frustration. Although typically observed in 4d 5d systems with strong spin orbit coupling, recent studies reveal that Co ions (Jeff = 1/2) in certain 3d oxides can also host Kitaev-like interactions. The polar magnetic compound KCo(PO3)3 (space group P6 c2) features Co ions forming a frustrated triangular lattice within quasi-two-dimensional CoO layers. Competing exchange pathways, an in-plane Co O K O Co (J1) and an interlayer Co O P O Co (J2) coupling, suggest the possibility of an exotic ground state. This work proposes muon spin relaxation ( SR) studies to probe its static and dynamic spin correlations across 50 mK 200 K and 0 3000 Oe. Zero-field, longitudinal-field, and weak-transverse-field SR spectra will be analyzed using stretched-exponential and oscillatory models to resolve static versus dynamic components, offering microscopic insight into low-temperature magnetism and potential QSL behavior in KCo(PO3)3.
