Determining the ground state and dynamics in herbertsmithite single crystals: a spinon-mediated liquid state?
Abstract: Previous local-probe experiments have established herbertsmithite, a material containing kagome layers of Cu2+ spins, as one of the most important model systems for exploring quantum spin-liquid (QSL) behaviour. Herbertsmithite realizes a QSL ground state whose precise nature, whether gapped or gapless, has remained under active debate. A recent breakthrough study revealed a pronounced peak in the magnetic susceptibility and spin noise around ~ 260 mK. This has been interpreted as a glassy state that results from spinon interactions mediated by the presence of a gapped Z2 spin-liquid state. Since single-crystal and powder samples of kagome systems can give distinct magnetic responses, and because an earlier muSR measurement was performed on powder specimens, it is now vital to re-examine the low-temperature magnetic behavior of single-crystal herbertsmithite using muSR. We intend to perform zero-field (ZF) and longitudinal-field (LF) muSR measurements to probe the presence or absence, and nature, of any magnetic ordering or the formation of a glassy state, and to characterize the low-energy spin dynamics.
