Muon Spin Relaxation Study of Shastry?Sutherland Lattice Compound: Ce2Ga(SeO3)4Cl

Abstract: The geometrically frustrated Shastry Sutherland (SS) model- a Heisenberg system with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbour (NN) and next-nearest-neighbour (NNN) interactions- is predicted to exhibit a spin-dimer state when J(NNN)>>J(NN) and Neel order when J(NN)>>J(NNN). Recent density-matrix renormalization group calculations demonstrate that the SS model hosts a narrow gapless spin-liquid phase for J(NN)/J(NNN)=(0.788, 0.820), which is sandwiched between plaquette-singlet and antiferromagnetic states. Experimentally, most SS magnets either dimerize or order magnetically. Even though both Ce3+ and Yb3+ have odd electrons where SOC and Crystal Electric effects leads to Kramer's doublet Jeff=1/2 ground state, most QSL candidates are Yb3+-based frustrated lattices as Ce3+ is prone to oxidizing to non-magnetic Ce4+. To the best of our knowledge there are no reports of a QSL candidate with Ce3+ on an SS lattice-a gap we propose to address with our crystal. We will investigate whether the Shastry Sutherland candidate Ce2Ga(SeO3)4Cl hosts persistent spin dynamics down to millikelvin temperatures. Using EMU in fly-past geometry with a dilution refrigerator, we will perform ZF, wTF, and LF measurements on a mosaic of single crystals (~4x4 mm2, mass >30 mg) as our hydrothermal growth yields limited crystals. The outcome will establish whether Ce3+ moments on an SSL in this compound realize a fluctuating ground state and guide follow-up Inelastic Neutron Scattering and theory.
