Elucidating the Mixed-Cation Effect in Na?O?K?O?TeO? Glasses for Optical Applications
Abstract: Elucidating the Mixed-Cation Effect (MCE) in tellurite glasses by systematically varying the Na O:K O ratio while maintaining TeO composition could reveal non-linear changes in both structure and optical response. The incorporation of small, high-field-strength Na cations (ionic radius 1.02 ) together with large, low-field-strength K cations (ionic radius 1.38 ) is expected to disrupt the glass network, inducing structural frustration and ionic congestion. These effects lead to anomalous or non-linear variations in Te O coordination environments, specifically [TeO ], [TeO +1], and [TeO ] units. Neutron total scattering measurements on the GEM diffractometer will be employed to resolve these coordination environments along with the local surroundings of Na and K . These results will correlate with macroscopic optical properties, including refractive index, optical band gap, Urbach energy, and third-order nonlinear susceptibility ( (3)). Understanding the MCE in tellurite glasses enables the design of high-performance photonic materials.
