Resolving Residual Stress Profile in Gas Cut Steel plates for Development of Predictive Simulation Modelling

Abstract: Gas cutting of thick steel plates introduces complex residual stress profiles due to rapid thermal cycling and uneven cooling, which can compromise structural integrity and fatigue life. This project aims to experimentally characterize these stress profiles in 20 mm thick Hardox 500 steel plates cut under varying industrial conditions (temperature and speed), using neutron diffraction at Engin-X. The measurements will provide non-destructive stress data along rolling and normal directions, enabling calibration of finite element models for predictive simulation. SSAB, a leading global producer of high-strength steels, provides the material and industrial context for the study. The results will support improved cutting practices and enhance plate flatness and durability of the wide range of components produced from thick steel plates.
