Residual Stress Mapping of MIG-Welded 304L Stainless Steel Cladding on Q345R Steel Using Neutron Diffraction
Abstract: The reliability of dissimilar metal welded structures, particularly 304L stainless steel cladded onto Q345R low alloy steel, depends strongly on residual stresses generated during fabrication. These stresses, which develop at the cladding substrate interface, influence structural integrity, service life, and susceptibility to cracking. This proposal aims to establish a baseline understanding of residual stress distributions in MIG-welded cladded joints using high-resolution neutron diffraction on the ENGIN-X beamline. The study will focus specifically on the role of cladding in stress development, rather than attempting to cover multiple simultaneous variables. Three representative samples are proposed: one stress-free reference specimen, one welded but unbent specimen, and one welded and pre-bent specimen. This simplified design ensures efficient use of beamtime while isolating the direct contribution of cladding and the combined effect of bending and welding. The results will provide fundamental insight into stress localisation at the weld interface, which is directly relevant to the safe design of pressure vessels and pipeline systems. The measurements will also form the foundation for validating finite element simulations, with future phases planned to investigate additional mechanical and environmental effects.
