Crystal field excitations in a novel Jeff=1/2 square lattice antiferromagnet
Abstract: Spin-liquid (SL) refers to a highly entangled quantum state wherein strong frustration-induced quantum fluctuations prevent a symmetry breaking phase transitions at T 0 in magnetic materials despite strong exchange interactions between spins. SLs are ideal hosts of exotic fractional quantum numbers coupled to emergent gauge fields and hold tantalizing prospects for application in fault-tolerant quantum computing. The experimental realization of SLs in two-dimensional spin lattice remains elusive in view of the presence of defects and anti-site disorder in real materials. Rare-earth based frustrated magnets provide a novel route for exploring the enigmatic SL state with fractional magnetic excitations. The recently synthesized a structurally perfect square lattice antiferromagnet Na2Nd2Ti3O10 seems a very promising SL candidate, as confirmed by a series of macroscopic measurements. The localized Nd3+ spins show neither magnetic order nor spin-freezing state down to 0.1 K. Thermodynamic data reveal an effective Jeff = 1/2 (Nd3+) in the Kramers doublet state and a weak antiferromagnetic interaction ( Jex ~0.7 K) between Jeff = 1/2 moments typical in 4f magnets. The specific heat reveals a broad peak at 0.7 K, reflecting the presence of short-range spin correlations. In this context, INS offers a sensitive local probe to track low-energy excitations possibly include those emerge from the crystal electric field, which are essential to understand the magnetism and anisotropy.
