Neutron Di?raction Analysis of Residual Stress in Low Carbon Steel Thin Walled Structured Fabricated by Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing
Abstract: Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) has proven to be efficient and cost-effective method to produce large hollow parts in modern industries. However, its ability comes with inevitable drawbacks, such as anisotropic behavior, uneven geometric features, and inferior mechanical properties compared to substractive manufacturing. Heating the materials into molten state and cooling it down repeatedly will change the structure of materials and their atoms, which lead to properties changes in the fabricated components. Thermal influence of the WAAM method also creates uneven stress in the components which builds residual stress in the fabricated components and causes unacceptable distortion. Because of those problems, this research investigates the effect of heat input in WAAM to the residual stress that occurred in WAAM fabricated thin wall structure. This research investigates residual stress distribution in ER70s-6 carbon steel filler materials printed in 5 mm ASTM A36 steel sheet. The specimens were fabricated using GMAW machine with bidirectional deposition pattern to build the layers of thin wall structure. Residual stress measurement was conducted using neutron diffraction analysis on ENGIN-X beamline at ISIS Neutron and Moun source. Residual stress is measured in three orthogonal directions at 24 points per sample using a 2x2x2 mm gauge volume. Neutron radiography on the IMAT instrument further visualises post-weld material to correlate with residual stress patterns.
