Evaluation of Residual Strains Induced by 20Hz Laser Shock Processing for 14%Cr Steam Turbine Blade Applications using Bragg Edge Neutron Imaging

Abstract: The research aims to evaluate the subsurface residual stress profile in a full-scale, low pressure steam turbine blade root treated with Laser Shock Processing (LSP). The focus is on validating LSP's effectiveness for lifetime enhancement by examining stress coverage and depth in complex geometries, specifically for 14%Cr FV520B blade material using advanced LSP techniques. Key objectives include determining the 2D residual stress distribution after thick water LSP treatment and assessing how treatment consistency relates to blade geometry. Bragg Edge Neutron Imaging will be employed for comprehensive strain mapping, providing broader and finer resolution data than traditional X-ray, Neutron, or Synchrotron Diffraction methods, thus enabling a more detailed comparison and assessment of the new LSP regime
