Investigate the role of softness in multi-responsive microgels: simultaneous structure and dynamics
Abstract: Recent measurements conducted at ISIS using our developed portable DLS-SANS apparatus, now operational on SANS beamlines, have yielded compelling insights into the simultaneous evolution of dynamics and structure in soft colloidal systems approaching the glass transition. Building on these results, we aim to investigate the correlation between the softness of the system and the corresponding changes in both structural and dynamical properties, as simultaneously probed through a new portable multiwavelength DLS-SANS apparatus we are currently building in collaboration with the ISIS facility (an upgrade of the single wavelength DLS-SANS apparatus that permits DLS measurements at different Q values). This approach will provide a deeper understanding of the fundamental differences between colloidal and structural glasses, and contribute to the ongoing debate within the soft matter community regarding the role of particle softness in modifying the phase behavior of colloidal systems. To this end, we propose a detailed study of an ultra-soft, thermo and pH-sensitive microgel composed of Interpenetrating Polymer Networks of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) and poly(acrylic acid). Our group has extensively characterized the behaviour of this microgel across a range of conditions temperature, pH, concentration and acrylic acid content using different laboratory, X-ray and Neutron experimental techniques.
