Muon spin rotation study of the complex magnetic behaviour of triple perovskites Ba3NdRuIrO9

Abstract: 6H-perovskites with formula Ba3MAA O9, which form in triple perovskite P63/mmc structure, display interesting magnetic properties on account of large spin-orbit coupling because of the shorter A-A distance in this structure. Among these the rare earth based triple perovskites Ba3NdRuIrO9 which host 4f (Nd), 4d (Ru) and 5d (Ir) moments evidence fascinating magnetic properties with competing localized and itinerant magnetism are of interest to us. The temperature dependent DC and AC magnetic susceptibility of Ba3NdRuIrO9 reveal a magnetic transition near 8.9 K, however there is no corresponding anomaly in the speci c heat measurements. This indicates presence of magnetic frustration in this system. However, the nature of this magnetic ordering transition and the resulting ground state spin structure have not been explored yet. Due to high neutron absorption cross-section from Ir as well as expected small ordered state Ir moment, neutron di raction investigations are found very di cult as witnessed by our recent accumulated beam time (RB No: RB2520182 on 8th October 2025). Therefore, investigations using the muon spin relaxation ( SR) measurements are highly required to understand the magnetism and spin dynamics in Ba3NdRuIrO9. We therefore propose to carry out SR measurements on triple perovskite Ba3NdRuIrO9 compound using the MuSR spectrometer EMU.
