Investigating the crystal-electric-field structure of triangular lattice HoTa7O19
Abstract: Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are exotic magnetic ground states characterized by long-range quantum entanglement and the absence of magnetic ordering down to zero temperature. Rare-earth (RE)-based frustrated lattices are prominent candidates for realizing QSL behaviour, owing to strong spin orbit coupling (SOC) and the localized nature of 4f electrons. Recently, NdTa7O19 has been reported to host a magnetically disordered ground state with Ising-like correlations giving rise to spin excitations persisting down to 40 mK. This finding highlights the potential of the family RETa7O19 to realize QSL or other exotic quantum states. We have successfully synthesized polycrystalline HoTa7O19, and performed magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and muon spin relaxation measurements. No magnetic ordering is detected down to 30 mK, indicating a magnetic disordered ground state. We observed two characteristic temperatures (8 K and 40 K) from both muon spin relaxation and specific heat measurements. To clarify the physical origin of the two characteristic temperatures, and further understand the underlying magnetic ground states of HoTa7O19, we propose detailed measurements of CEF levels. These experiments are essential to distinguish between low-energy spin dynamics of magnetic origin and relaxation processes driven by CEF excitations.
