UNDERSTANDING THE INTERACTION OF ORGANIC CAPPING AGENTS WITH IRON OXYHYDROXIDE NANOSTRUCTURES

Abstract: A capping agent effect in nanomaterial synthesis has been widely studied. Studies have shown the influence of different binding modes between a capping agent and the nanoparticle surface to the particle growth as well as the catalytic activity of nanoparticle. However, the evidence on the binding modes and the arrangement of the capping agent on the particle surface is still unclear. Our recent study shows a different effect of capping ligand to the produced iron oxyhydroxide (FeOOH) phase, morphology and its photocatalytic activity. The acetate with a carboxyl shows no effect on the particle. EDTA with four carboxyl selectively produces goethite with small particle size. Moreover, citrate with three carboxyl produced an amorphous FeOOH phase with outstanding photocatalytic activity. The observed IR bands of EDTA capped sample and citrate capped sample confirms the characteristic vibrations of EDTA and Citrate on the FeOOH, but further understanding of the interaction mode and the arrangement of capping ligand on the material surface as well as its influence on the catalytic activity is essential for the surface modification strategy of nanostructure. In this study, INS will be employed to examine of the hydrogen bonding interaction between organic capping agent and FeOOH nanostructure and the capping agent arrangement on the particle. The INS analysis will be complemented with FT-IR, Raman spectroscopy and XPS analysis.
