Magnetic and crystal structure of the Octochlore Lattice compounds Ho3IrO6
Abstract: The octochlore lattice compounds Ho3IrO6 represent a novel platform for studying geometric frustration and complex magnetic ordering in three-dimensional systems. Ho3IrO6 crystallizes in a well-ordered cubic structure (S.G. Ia-3) with Ho3+ ions forming a network of corner-sharing octahedra, which introduces unique magnetic constraints and interactions. Heat capacity, and magnetic susceptibility, reveal a magnetic phase transition at 1 K, strong antiferromagnetic correlations, and a frustration factor of ~18, indicative of significant magnetic frustration. DC and AC susceptibility measurements further highlight a sharp anomaly at 1 K, field-sensitive metamagnetic behavior, and a complex H T phase diagram, suggesting the presence of field-induced transitions and non-trivial magnetic ordering. To elucidate the magnetic and crystal structure of Ho3IrO6, we propose high-resolution neutron powder diffraction experiments on the GEM diffractometer. These measurements will provide definitive nuclear structure refinements at RT and track subtle structural distortions at intermediate temperatures. Low-temperature data (< 1 K) will resolve the magnetic propagation vector and spin arrangement to determine the magnetic structure. The results will clarify the role of magnetostructural coupling, cation ordering, and exchange pathways in stabilizing the observed magnetic behavior, helping our understanding of frustrated magnetism in octochlore lattice systems.
