Probing magnetic structure of p-wave magnet candidate MnRuP by powder Neutron diffraction

Abstract: Unconventional antiferromagnets with nontrivial spin textures have recently emerged as promising platforms for spintronics, particularly due to their ability to host large anomalous Hall effects (AHE) despite vanishing net magnetization. MnRuP is a compelling candidate in this class, crystallizing in the polar hexagonal space group P-62m and exhibiting three antiferromagnetic transitions. Our transport and magnetization measurements reveal a sizable zero-field AHE in a temperature regime with linear magnetization, strongly suggesting an unconventional magnetic state, potentially associated with incommensurate helical order and metallic p-wave magnetism. However, the microscopic magnetic structure of MnRuP remains unresolved, with only a limited and inconclusive neutron study reported nearly four decades ago. We propose a zero-field powder neutron diffraction experiment on the WISH diffractometer to determine the magnetic structures of MnRuP. High-resolution, long-wavelength neutron diffraction is essential to resolve closely spaced incommensurate magnetic peaks and weak magnetic reflections. Knowing the magnetic structure of MnRuP is crucial for evaluating its relevance within emerging theories of p-wave magnetism and for understanding the origin and suppression of the AHE. The results will provide essential input for ongoing theoretical work and form the foundation for future field-dependent single-crystal neutron studies.
