Liquid structure of supersaturated NaCl and KCl aqueous solutions
Abstract: Under pressure, electrolyte-water systems exhibit unique behaviour in contrast to the ambient pressure such as the formation of ion-incorporated ices and hyperhydrates. In liquid forms, the solubility of electrolytes (e.g., NaCl and KCl) increases under pressure and the system is considered governed more by the ionic species. However, the relations between the solid/liquid structure and the phase/kinetic behaviour are not well understood. In this proposal, we will perform neutron total scattering experiments of supersaturated NaCl and KCl solutions at ~ 1.3 GPa and elevated temperatures. These experiments will clarify the gap between the opposite trends of local structure in the solution upon compression at different temperatures. The cation substitution will provide the ubiquitous nature of the hydration structures by comparison between the more/less hydrogen-bonded natures expected for NaCl/KCl cases deduced from their hydrate formation under pressure.
