Understanding the mechanism of simultaneous C-O and C-S cleavage on supported MoS2 catalysts during co-processing of lignin and petroleum compounds ? MAPS

Abstract: Co-processing is used to produce drop-in fuel without requiring major changes or modifications of existing reactors by simultaneous hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin compounds with hydrodesulphurisation (HDS) of petroleum. We have investigated the interaction of a model lignin compound (guaiacol) and an organic sulphur model compound (benzethiol) on MoS2 catalysts on various supports prior to the catalytic co-processing reaction. The INS study reveal shifts of the characteristic peaks of guaiacol and benzethiol indicating a catalyst-compound interaction in all supported MoS2 catalyst. A stronger interaction was observed for MoS2/aerosil compared to MoS2/zeolite and MoS2/bcl-silica. We now wish to understand the details of the interaction of the compounds on the catalyst to understand the mechanism of simultaneous C-O and C-S cleavage during the co-processing by analysing the system after the catalytic reaction.
