Neutron Radiography of Rotating Heat Pipe Under Operating Conditions: Comparing Commercial Sintered-Wick and Wickless Configurations
Abstract: Efficient thermal management is vital for sustaining the performance, reliability, and lifespan of electric motors and other rotating machinery. The rotating heat pipe (RHP) offers a compact passive cooling solution by transferring heat through phase change without external power. However, existing studies mainly examine wickless RHPs at high rotational speeds, leaving limited insight into performance under practical low-to-moderate regimes. This research directly compares a commercial sintered-wick and a custom wickless RHP using real-time neutron radiography at the IMAT beamline. Both configurations will be tested on a rotating rig under controlled heating powers (40-80 %), speeds (0-500 rpm), and orientations (0-15 ). Multipoint thermocouple data will be synchronized with neutron images to observe condensate motion, vapor-core stability, and phase distribution. The study systematically evaluates the influence of wick structure and filling ratio on liquid return and overall thermal resistance. The resulting rotor-relevant dataset will provide the first visual evidence comparing these RHP types under realistic operating conditions. The outcomes will inform design guidelines for integrating RHPs into electric motor rotors, enhancing energy efficiency and reliability while advancing neutron imaging for two-phase thermal systems.
