Adsorption of model lung surfactants in deep eutectic solvents at the air-water interface
Abstract: Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) are molecular mixtures similar to ionic liquids, having melting points below room temperature. However instead of being a salt, the mixture contains two molecules with strong H-bonding that hinder formation of an ordered crystalline network. DES have low vapour pressure, adjustable polarity, and tunable components which make them interesting as green solvents while being far less toxic than typical ionic liquids. They are currently being extensively explored for extraction of active species from biomass and solubilisation of therapeutic agents for dermal delivery. Solubilisation in DES can preserve biomolecular activity and structures during storage at room temperature making them interesting as potential delivery agents for therapeutics. We are therefore exploring the use of DES as media for the dissolution and delivery of model lung surfactants, to avoid cold chain issues. Here we wish to study the adsorption at the air-water interface of model lung surfactants from DES solutions when such solutions are dispersed into the aqueous subphase. DES components are water soluble but may still interact with the lipids, altering surface adsorption behaviour and packing. We will use deuterated lipids, and probe lipid films at the air-water interface to determine how they interact with DES components which remain in solution and whether comparable interfacial structures are found to those formed on pure water.
