A Parametric Study the Effect of Plasma Current Variation on the Graphitization of Biomass: A Vibrational Analysis Using MAPS

Abstract: Graphene oxide (GO) is a form of graphene that contains more oxygen at the edges. GO is generally synthesized by the Hummer method at relatively low temperatures, but it utilizes damaging chemicals and requires a long synthesis process. To address these issues, this study introduces a plasma-based method that converts biomass materials into carbon-rich substances such as graphene oxide by utilizing high temperatures over a shorter period, without the need for any chemicals. In the previous study, three types of biomasses, such as rambutan stems, palm fronds, and coconut fronds, were treated with plasma (80 A, 15 L/min argon) for 5 minutes, leading to graphitization and the formation of carbon-rich structures like graphene oxide. SEM and TEM imaging revealed graphene layers with a carbon-to-oxygen ratio above 80%, while Raman and FTIR analyses confirmed the presence of graphene oxide through characteristic D and G bands and O?H and C?O functional groups. The aim of this study is a parametric investigation of the effect of varying the plasma current parameters on the graphitization process of these biomass materials. INS is often described as being complementary to infrared and Raman spectroscopy. Thus, we proposed to use MAPS instrument in order to observe the C?H/O?H stretch region without the electrical anharmonicity.
