Spin excitations in a ferromagnetic spin-1 chain with weak uniaxial anisotropy
Abstract: This is a proposal to study quantum effects in NiNb2O6, which contains ferromagnetic S = 1 spin chains which are coupled antiferromagnetically and orders at TN = 6K. We will measure the magnon dispersion parallel and perpendicular to the chains in the magnetically ordered phase to determine the intra- and inter-chain exchange. We will also measure the spectrum along the chains at higher temperatures to search for a one-magnon continuum of excitations which is predicted to exist via a mechanism which applies only for S > 1/2.
