Model Lung Surfactant Self-assembly in Deep Eutectic Solvents
Abstract: Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) are molecular mixtures similar to ionic liquids, having melting points below room temperature. However instead of being a salt, the mixture contains two molecules with strong H bonding that hinder formation of an ordered crystalline network. DES have low vapour pressure, adjustable polarity, and tunable components which make them interesting as green solvents while being far less toxic than typical ionic liquids. They have also been demonstrated to both support self-assembly and preserve structures of biological species such as lipid membranes and proteins in the absence of water. This leads to them having a preservative effect for biomolecules, which we are exploring as a possible way to improve the shelf life of lung surfactant formulations. Here, therefore we wish to study the bulk solution self-assembly of model lung surfactant systems (mixtures of lipids DOPC, DPPC, POPG) to determine how they interact with DES and the morphologies of the aggregates formed by these lipids in these novel solvents.
