The application of INS to investigate the active sites of phosgene synthesis catalysts - MAPS
Abstract: In a medium-term collaboration with industrial partners (Huntsman and SABIC), work has been underway in the University of Glasgow?s Chemical Process Fundamentals Laboratory (CPFL) to explore phosgene synthesis over activated carbon catalysts. Presently, advancement in securing more favourable catalytic performance is impeded by a poor understanding of classifying activated carbons, which are notoriously hard to characterise at the molecular level. INS is well placed in this role. So, in collaboration with SABIC, up-coming TOSCA (RB2510370) and MAPS (RB2510582) beamtime will be used to access the vibrational spectrum of four activated carbons that demonstrate favourable catalytic performance. Although the spectra are anticipated to discriminate between the different commercial grade samples under examination, something not possible via optical spectroscopy, as presented, the spectra will not be able to discern which of the catalysts? various functionalities constitute the chlorine adsorption sites responsible for turnover. Therefore, a series of chlorine adsorption experiments are planned that, via adoption of background subtraction techniques, will provide unique information on the distribution and number of active sites responsible for a critical step in the phosgene synthesis catalytic process. This MAPS application is linked to an associated TOSCA proposal.
