INS STUDY OF KETO-ENOL AND NITROGEN FUNCTIONAL GROUPS IN CURCUMIN-DERIVED CARBON DOTS (Cur-CDs) - MAPS
Abstract: Curcumin-derived carbon dots (Cur-CDs) exhibit unique surface functionalities that enable the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), offering great potential in biomedical and environmental applications. However, the precise contribution of oxygen versus nitrogen configurations to this ROS activity remains poorly understood. Our aim is to understand how temperature affects the keto enol equilibrium and the resulting oxygen and nitrogen configurations in the materials. We focus on five samples: pure curcumin and Cur-CDs synthesized at 140 C, 160 C, 180 C, and 200 C. While XPS analysis indicates changes in the relative abundance of C=O and C O species, it cannot distinguish whether these signals originate from keto, enol, or COOH groups. Therefore, we propose using MAPS inelastic neutron scattering to target the O H and N H stretching region (3000 4000 cm ), which is highly sensitive to local hydrogen bonding environments. These measurements will allow us to resolve the specific vibrational fingerprints of oxygen-based species that are otherwise indistinguishable by XPS or FTIR, particularly in the critical temperature range of 160 180 C. The data will be supported by DFT and Mantid simulations, and integrated into machine learning models to guide the rational design of Cur-CDs with enhanced ROS-generating functionalities.
