Variable Pressure Neutron Diffraction Study of the Oxide Ion Conductor Mo2Ta2O11

Abstract: Interest in oxide-ion and proton-conducting materials has grown recently due to their application as electrolytes in solid-oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). In order to make SOFCs more economical is highly desirable to move towards lower working temperatures. To reach this goal new electrolyte materials are needed with high oxide ion conductivity at 400-600 degrees C. We have now synthesised a new oxide ion conductor Mo2Ta2O11. Raman spectroscopy suggests that Mo2Ta2O11 exhibits crystallographic phase changes at 0.98 and 5.51 GPa. We propose to investigate the proposed crystallographic phase changes in Mo2Ta2O11 as the pressure is increased up to 6 GPa at ambient temperature and to assess the impact of pressure on the energy landscape for oxide ion migration.
