µSR investigations of spin-dynamics and magnetism in Triple Perovskites Ba3PrRuIrO9.

Abstract: 6H-hexagonal mixed triple perovskites with general formula Ba3AMM O9 (A, any magnetic/nonmagnetic mono, di, tri, and tetravalent cation; M, M being 4d & 5d transition metal ions, respectively) and mixed MM O9 dimers offer a potential paradigm for investigating a plethora of unconventional quantum magnetic ground states. Ba3PrRuIrO9 is an exemplary compound of this family with mixed 4d (Ru) & 5d (Ir) moments and display an interesting magnetic behavior with competing localized and itinerant magnetism. The temperature dependent DC & AC magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements of Ba3PrRuIrO9 reveal a weak magnetic transition near 3.5 K, while Curie-Weiss fitting yields a sufficiently negative Weiss temperature ( W ~ -32.3 K). This indicates presence of magnetic frustration in this system. However, the nature of this magnetic ordering transition and the resulting ground state spin structure have not been explored yet. Due to high neutron absorption cross-section from Ir as well as expected small ordered state Ir moment, neutron diffraction investigations are very difficult. Therefore, investigations using the muon spin relaxation ( SR) measurements are highly required to understand the magnetism and spin dynamics in Ba3PrRuIrO9. We therefore propose to carry out SR measurements on triple perovskite Ba3PrRuIrO9 compound using the SR spectrometer EMU.
