The treatment of magnetic scattering in PDF measurements

Abstract: We seek GEM beamtime to investigate the effect of magnetic self scattering from magnetic ions in the sample on neutron PDF measurements. We wish to make PDF measurements of crystalline Fe2O3 (Fe3+ ions) and FeO (Fe2+ ions). In the first instance, these will be used in relation to recent GEM measurements on a series of iron-containing bismuth borate glasses. The magnetism of Fe2O3 is already well characterised, and hence the measurement on this material can be used to confirm that our treatment of the magnetic scattering is correct. This will enable us to correct the diffraction data on the glasses for the effect of magnetic scattering, and will also enable us to determine the magnetic moment of the Fe3+ ions in the glasses.
